College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor

Purdue QB Drew Brees made an excellent decision by electing to stay in school for his senior year in 2000. If he had come out at the end of this year, the odds are very long that he would have been a first-round pick. Quarterbacks tend to benefit a great deal by getting more experience in the collegiate ranks, especially if they play in passing offenses. Had he come out, Brees probably would have gone in the second round, as things stand now.

New Mexico SS Brian Urlacher, who plays sort of a combination LB-S role, is the best defensive football player most people have never seen and is one of the five best defensive players in college football today. He also plays on all special teams and on offense, and he has the hands of a wide receiver.

A big reason for the drop-off in talent in the Pacific-10 is that its member schools are losing so many of their prize prospects to schools all around the country. Higher academic standards and not enough money to upgrade facilities to match those at other universities have really hurt these schools. Another factor is that schools from other parts of the country are now taking a lot of the kids who normally would have headed to junior college and then ended up in the Pac-10 and are giving them a chance to attend four-year schools right off the bat even though some are marginal academically.

North Carolina LB Brandon Spoon and UCLA CB Jason Bell, who were injured earlier this fall, have decided to use their redshirt years and will be back in school next season.

North Texas CB Detrion Woodson will miss the rest of the season with a left knee injury.

Texas A&M has dismissed RB Dante Hall from the team.

West Virginia CB Nate Terry is out for the rest of the year with an arm injury.
