College notepad

Louisville QB Chris Redman may have won me over with his play at the end of the Memphis game. Redman stood in there against the rush as fearlessly as anyone I have ever seen and brought his club to a come-from-behind victory. Memphis, which does a great job of scheming vs. the pass on defense, had Tennessee QB Tee Martin completely confused a few weeks ago but was unable to fool Redman very often.

Indiana DE Adewale Ogunleye, who suffered knee ligament damage vs. Northwestern on Oct. 9, will probably have surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews, who is one of the best in the business. Although Ogunleye is a great young man with tremendous character, those people who said Ogunleye would have been a first- or second-round pick had he come out for the NFL draft last year were not in the ballpark. The more you study Ogunleye, the more you see his limiting factors. He definitely needed a big senior season to be a high NFL draft pick. He is not an effective player vs. the run directly at him, and he always had a major problem keeping blockers off his legs.

Penn State QB Kevin Thompson suffered a slightly separated right shoulder vs. Ohio State. Most of the time, Penn State looks like a much better and more multidimensional offensive team with Rashard Casey at quarterback. Casey has the mobility, escape dimension and improvisational skills that Thompson lacks but may not be as consistent throwing the ball as Thompson is.

In Cal’s impressive shutout win over UCLA, Andre Carter, son of former Broncos DL Ruben Carter, looked like an All-American at defensive end. OLB Sekou Sanyika provided an excellent outside rush in that game. Another player who really stood out was CB-RS Deltha O’Neal, who for much of the game blanketed fine UCLA WR Danny Farmer.

Memphis CB Reginald Howard suffered the same type of vertebra injury that almost ended Michigan State CB Amp Campbell’s career last season.
