College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor

There’s a lot of news coming out of Tennessee. Volunteers QB Tee Martin, who already had been playing with an injured shoulder, hurt his hand and suffered a mild concussion near the end of Tennessee’s win over Georgia. As of presstime, it was not known whether Martin had broken his hand or just sprained it. Volunteers RB Jamal Lewis looked like the best running back in the country vs. the Bulldogs, hitting up in there the way scouts love to see a running back do it. Tennessee was without starting OLT Chad Clifton for the Georgia game. He is still out with a hyperextended elbow. In that game, DT Billy Ratliff broke his foot, and he had to have surgery. The injury probably will end the hard-luck career of Ratliff, who at one time appeared to have immense potential.

Florida State WR Peter Warrick blew an excellent chance at the Heisman Trophy for a few hundred dollars’ worth of clothing. However, the player who really may have cost himself money is Florida State’s other wideout, Laveranues Coles, who with his great speed could have gone as high as the second round in the NFL draft had he made a good showing late in the year.

WR Plaxico Burress of Michigan State looked like a taller Randy Moss vs. Michigan.

It appears as though Mississippi is going to redshirt WR Grant Heard because he has only played one game this season due to injury.

Notre Dame may have lost its most reliable wide receiver, Raki Nelson, with a knee injury (torn left medial collateral ligament) suffered vs. Oklahoma. There is a chance Nelson could be back before the end of the season.

Another example of how a running back’s statistics can be misleading is the showing of Iowa State’s Darren Davis vs. Nebraska. The box score says Davis gained more than 100 yards, so you might assume he had a pretty good game. But almost all of his yardage came after Nebraska had built a huge lead and was playing its backups.
