College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999

  • Georgia Tech QB Joe Hamilton is looking more and more like a Heisman Trophy winner. While he does not have Doug Flutie’s arm strength, Hamilton’s intangibles are so strong that he may have a chance to play in the NFL. But he could be a superstar in the CFL.
  • Very often, statistics can be misleading. If you look at the box score and see that Miami (Ohio) RB Travis Prentice ran for 131 yards on 27 carries vs. an outstanding Marshall team, you would think that Prentice had a very good game. But Prentice got 83 of those yards in the fourth quarter after Marshall called off the dogs when it was leading 32-0.
  • Tennessee OLT Chad Clifton left the Auburn game with a hyperextended right elbow. In that game, Volunteers S Deon Grant, despite playing with a bad shoulder, picked off three passes in the first half, including the first pass of the game, which he returned for a touchdown.
  • The loss of RB Ricky Williams for the season may not hurt Texas Tech as much as some people think if Sammy Morris can stay healthy. Morris, a senior who sat out the last two seasons with academic problems, started the year at fullback but looks like a natural tailback. He had a tremendous game in the Red Raiders’ upset of Texas A&M, which has a very good defense, as he rushed for 170 yards.
  • In Georgia Tech’s game vs. Maryland, Yellow Jackets OLB Chris Edwards dislocated his right shoulder for the second time this season.
  • Oklahoma State ILB Kenyatta Wright has a fractured hand.
