College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999

  • The best defensive player I have seen all year is not Penn State LB LaVar Arrington. It is Virginia Tech DE Corey Moore. Moore is only about 5-foot-11, 220 pounds, but he is a great college football player and may be the best football player in the land with the possible exception of Florida State WR Peter Warrick.
  • People didn’t realize how much Tennessee missed offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, now the head coach at Mississippi, until the Volunteers lost to Florida. In that game, Tennessee seemed almost clueless to what Florida was doing on defense and made almost no adjustments. The Volunteers did not even have a chip package to put in when they couldn’t block the outside rush, and that is totally inexcusable. The other thing many people may not know is that Tennessee QB Tee Martin separated his shoulder in the Florida game but continued to play.
  • It was a bad week for injuries overall. It appears as if California’s top inside linebacker, Matt Beck, will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.
  • Wake Forest RB Kito Gary fractured his left arm. However, Morgan Kane, who had been starting ahead of Gary, continues to roll and is leading the ACC in rushing.
  • Oregon PK Nathan Villegas injured his leg vs. USC. He didn’t get hurt during game action but while celebrating after he made a kick during the game. His absence later in the game almost cost Oregon the win. The more serious injury for the Ducks was to star RB Reuben Droughns, who separated ribs and tore cartilage.
  • Brigham Young TE Carlos Nuno left this weekend’s game with a sprained left knee, and ILB Rob Morris was never able to suit up.
