1999 draft continues to plague Vikings in 2000 draft

The Vikings selected DT Chris Hovan with their
first-round draft choice, and I think this is pretty decent value for a quality player.
The criticism here isn't with what the Vikings did with this pick but with
what they did last season. It was then, in the 1999 draft, that the Vikings
sacrificed their small window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl. That was when they
inexplicably failed to move up to get a cornerback, and instead took QB Daunte Culpepper.
Then, later in the first round, they wasted a pick on Dimitrius Underwood.
Neither player helped them in 1999 when they had a shot at the Super Bowl.
Neither player did anything to solve the Vikings glaring CB needs.
Culpepper may turn out to be a strong player, but he did nothing for the
team last season. He'll probably start this season, but I don't think he'll make them a
Super Bowl contender.
If the Vikings had made a move for Champ Bailey or Chris McAlister and
also re-signed Jeff George after last season's great performance, wouldn't you like this
team a whole lot better?
As it is, they have added a nice piece to the DL puzzle in Hovan, an
overachiever with great intangibles, but their hole at cornerback remains the size of the
Grand Canyon.
One can only wonder when the Vikings will finally utilize some serious
firepower on the CB position.
