2000 NFL draft day coverage

The party is at the house of RB James Stewart

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

James Stewart will get his big chance this season.

He gets to be "the Guy." He doesn't have to look over his shoulder. It's his ball, and he can do with it as he pleases.

He's always been viewed as a guy who can be a quality player, but just might not be good enough to completely hitch your wagon to.

In Jacksonville, he was a fantastic backup who did a great job of filling in for Fred Taylor when he was hurt. I was very impressed with his attitude last season. I covered a Jaguars game when Taylor returned from injury and had a sensational game. Stewart displayed no jealousy over the fact that he was again about to become the forgotten man in spite of the great job he had been doing.

That won't be the case in Detroit where Stewart signed for big bucks this offseason. It looked like it might, though, since there was a school of thought that the Lions might draft a running back in the first round to go with Stewart. We'll never know if that rumor was true or not, since the elite running backs ran out just before the Lions picked.

Adding to Stewart's good fortune, not only was no running back selected in the first round by Detroit, but the Lions then added an offensive lineman to lead the way for Stewart when they took Stockar McDougle. If last year's walking wounded along the offensive line return to health as hoped, the offensive line could be pretty good.

No competition for the No. 1 RB job and an offensive line that could be on
the rise. What more could Stewart ask for?

Absolutely nothing.
