2000 NFL draft day coverage

Kudos to Seattle for getting Shaun Alexander

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

If I am the Seattle Seahawks, I am high-fiving. I am jumping up and down with excitement.

RB Ricky Watters has a little bit left in his tank, but that tank is starting to get a little low. This pick should give offensive guru Mike Holmgren a star running back for as long as Holmgren will likely be around.

Holmgren has always shown the ability to develop quarterbacks and wide
receivers, so I have no doubt they will be fine at those spots in the coming years. With Watters getting up in years, though, running back was looking like a down-the-road concern.

Not any more.

Not only does Alexander run the ball well, he is a very effective pass catcher. That latter quality should be a real plus for whatever quarterback
Holmgren decides to develop for the long haul.

With WR Joey Galloway now calling Dallas home, the Seahawks needed a play maker on offense. Alexander may not be a wide receiver, but he is a play maker. This pick makes a ton of sense.

Not only does it fill a position for the future, but it will make Watters more effective for however long he continues to play since he won't have to take a heavy-duty pounding.
