2000 NFL draft day coverage

Thomas Jones will make Jake Plummer a big-time comeback story

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

If you are looking for the early line on Comeback Player of the Year candidates after the draft, take a look at the Arizona Cardinals.

By taking RB Thomas Jones in the first round, the Cardinals just improved QB Jake Plummer's outlook in a big way.

Plummer should be a star for many years to come. That said, his numbers were terrible last season. After a very promising 1998 season, Plummer's stats went in the toilet in '99.

His passer rating in '99 was 50.8. If you play in the NBA, that's not bad for a field-goal percentage. For a quarterback, though, that's a terrible number.

Part of the reason was that the running game was awful. A young quarterback needs a strong ground game in order to progress. Plummer just got that thanks to Jones.

The WR weapons are in place. The franchise runner just got added. Plummer is a year more experienced.

The arrow is pointing up for Plummer. Pointing straight at Comeback Player of the Year consideration.
