2000 NFL draft day coverage

Brian Billick is the head coach to watch

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

The most intriguing head coach during training camp 2000 is Brian Billick of the Baltimore Ravens.

Billick is an offensive guru. The Ravens have added RB Jamal Lewis and WR Travis Taylor to the equation in the first round of this year's draft. They added veteran TE Shannon Sharpe via free agency. We're talking about some serious weapons for Billick to play mad scientist with in the upcoming season and beyond.

If Lewis can put his past knee woes behind him, he and Taylor are extremely exciting additions who should have very productive careers.

And that isn't even the reason I find Billick to be so interesting in the coming training camp. Even more than an offensive guru, Billick is a QB guru. With so many weapons at the skill position spots, Billick's ability to
develop a quarterback becomes one of the most intriguing subjects of training camp.

I've never been a Tony Banks fan, but Billick did an amazing job with him
last season. Plus, the Ravens have added Trent Dilfer to the equation. I've
always been a bigger supporter of Dilfer than most, so I think he'll eventually win the No. 1 QB job. Time will tell.

Can Banks build on last season? Can Dilfer rebound with a new team?

Can Billick turn one of them into a star? Or at least have them producing as a quality starter?

If the answer is yes, the Ravens will be one of the most improved teams in football. Their defense was already great, and the offense has been dramatically upgraded.

My money is on Billick being able to put the final piece of the puzzle in place at quarterback with the Banks/Dilfer two-headed monster.

If you are looking for a surprise team that will improve by leaps and bounds, take a look at Billick's Ravens.
