2000 NFL draft day coverage

Kordell Stewart hits the jackpot

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

Some people might say that the Cleveland Browns are the big winners of this year's draft since they were able to pick a franchise player with great
character in Courtney Brown.

Some people might say the Redskins are the big winners of the draft since they were able to double up with LaVar Arrington and Chris Samuels early in the first round.

I disagree. I think the biggest winner in the draft is Steelers QB Kordell Stewart. Let's face it, if the Steelers had taken Chad Pennington, Stewart's future as an NFL quarterback might have been over. If the Steelers had taken Pennington, it was probably just a matter of time until Stewart and his shaky confidence were moved from quarterback to wide receiver. Maybe the move would have happened in a month, a year, two years. But there's a good chance it would have happened.

Instead, the Steelers took WR Plaxico Burress. Thus, not only does Stewart's long-term future at quarterback remain intact, but he gets a terrific weapon to throw to.

Suddenly, the Steelers have a very nice group of wideouts. Suddenly, Stewart does not have long-term competition at his position.

It remains to be seen if Stewart can become a star at quarterback in the NFL. What we do know is that he will still have a chance to accomplish that goal. Plus, he has the weapons to get it done. The rest is up to him.

Stardom has not been handed to him. Opportunity has. That makes Stewart the draft's biggest winner.
