2000 NFL draft day coverage

Baltimore cornerbacks are ready to deal with AFC Central influx of wide receivers

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

The AFC Central has suddenly become WR Central.

Consider the first 32 picks of this year's draft:

No. 4: Peter Warrick to the Bengals
No. 8: Plaxico Burress to the Steelers
No. 10: Travis Taylor to the Ravens
No. 29: R. Jay Soward to Jaguars
No. 32: Dennis Northcutt to Browns

The Bengals have Warrick and Carl Pickens.

The Steelers have Burress and Troy Edwards.

The Jaguars have Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell to go with Soward.

The Browns have Kevin Johnson and Darren Chiaverini to go with Northcutt, which may not be scary yet, but with Tim Couch at quarterback they could develop very nicely.

In other words, AFC Central teams had better have quality cornerbacks to
deal with all of these wideouts.

That is why the Baltimore Ravens look to be in such great shape. With young first-rounders Duane Starks and Chris McAlister in place, the Ravens are perfectly set up to deal with is becoming an area of strength in the AFC Central.

The Ravens are young and talented all over the place, which makes them a team on the rise. In the AFC Central, their young corners are exceptionally important to their future success.
