2000 NFL draft day coverage

Rob Morris is a terrific fit for the Colts

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 15, 2000

I love what the Colts did in taking MLB Rob Morris.

How often does a team picking as late as Indianapolis get to choose a guy who is a great value at a position of need?

Morris was extremely productive in college. He gets high marks for his instincts. He seems to know the game well. In other words, he seems to have good football intangibles.

These are great qualities for a team on the verge of greatness.

The Colts are a team full of players who produce. They don't seem like a team full of guys who are projections to be great. They get the job done.

They are a team full of hard workers who really want to be great. Instead of merely giving lip service to becoming an elite team, they put in the work to get it done. This past season when I was doing a column on QB Peyton Manning, I was struck at how many people with the Colts and around the league raved at Manning's work ethic and the way he inspires his teammates to work so hard in practice and after practice. Even though Morris is known as a fun-loving free spirit, I think he will fit in exceptionally well with this atmosphere.

A team as close as the Colts are to a Super Bowl do not need a non-producer who is a workout warrior. They need a guy who can come in and produce quickly.

Early productivity is not easy to find when you are picking 28th in the
first round. I think the Colts found it in Morris.
