2000 NFL draft day coverage

Browns made the right decision in drafting Courtney Brown

The Browns absolutely made the right decision in drafting Courtney Brown with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Sure, LaVar Arrington might have a little more upside potential.

Sure, Peter Warrick would be great in tandem with Tim Couch.

Nonetheless, Brown was the way to go. He and Arrington essentially had the same draft grade atop the draft list. If that is the case, Brown makes more sense since he is the much safer pick.

He is much less likely to bust out than Arrington. I don't think Arrington will flop, but if their grades are the same then Brown makes more sense.

I especially like Brown since he is such a great character guy.  It is crucial for teams that their stars provide leadership. Great leadership.

I was talking with an executive for the Rams the other day about their star guys in the trenches — OT Orlando Pace and DE Kevin Carter. I kept trying to talk about the luxury of having star performers on each side of the line, but the exec kept stressing how he loves the fact that Pace and Carter provide leadership and how important that is from star players. He kept stressing that they give the other players around them something to shoot for.

With Brown and Couch on board, the Browns have great leaders on both sides of the ball as well as star talent.

With the first pick in the draft you know you are going to get a great talent. The key is for the money not to go to his head. That will not be a problem with Brown.

The Browns now have the two most important positions in football filled with future stars and future leaders.

The building blocks are in place. The Browns are off to a great start.
