Scouting Combine 2000

Q&A with Virginia RB Thomas Jones

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000

Q: What’s your greatest asset?

Jones: I think I have good vision, good quickness. I have the ability to make people miss. And I think I block well. Those are probably my biggest assets as a running back.

Q: A lot of people compare you to Emmitt Smith. What do you think about that?

Jones: Emmitt Smith is a great back, and I’m honored to be mentioned in the same breath with him. But I’m Thomas Jones. I have my own style. Hopefully, I can go out there and make a name for myself.

Q: When you were growing up, did you always want to be a professional running back?

Jones: I always wanted to be in the NFL. You watch the guys, Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett, when you’re little, and you never think you have a shot to be there. But I feel blessed to be in the position I’m in.

Q: Your mother worked in the coal mines while raising you and your siblings. Did you learn much from the hard work she did?

Jones: A learned a lot. Working where she worked, it wasn’t an easy job. Knowing that every day she’d go in and something could happen to her definitely made me appreciate what she was doing, and it gave me motivation to go out and work hard and play hard every game.
