Scouting Combine 2000

Q&A with Florida State PK Sebastian Janikowski

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000

Q: What’s your situation off the field right now?

Janikowski: I know a lot of people are talking about it (a felony charge of allegedly trying to bribe an off-duty police officer to gain the release of Janikowski's roommate from custody). But everything’s going to be fine. I’m just trying to put it behind me and move on.

Q: Are there a lot of teams asking about the legal stuff, and if so, what are you telling them?

Janikowski: Yeah, definitely they ask me, but I’m prepared for them. I’ve been giving everybody the same kind of response. College kids always do stupid things, and you always learn from your mistakes. If you’re going to be a man and support your family with a good job, you have to watch yourself because you don’t know what can happen.

Q: What is your longest field goal ever?

Janikowski: Seventy-four yards. I did it just horsing around in practice. I don’t think I could ever kick one like that for real. Too much pressure.

Q: A lot of people think you have a chance to be picked in the first round. Would that be a dream come true?

Janikowski: That is definitely a dream, but I’ll be OK with whatever happens. It really doesn’t matter when I’m drafted or who I play for. I just want to play.

Q: Can you see yourself kicking for a cold-weather team?

Janikowski: I’m from Poland. I can get used to wherever I am.

Q: When did you first realize how strong a leg you had?

Janikowski: Probably the first time was my senior year in high school after my friends encouraged me to try out for the team and show the coaches what I could do.

Q: How much of a motivation is it to get your mother to the U.S., and how is she doing right now?

Janikowski: It’s the biggest thing for me. I talked to my coach at Florida State and told him I had to come out early because I needed to help support her. Poland is such a poor country. She’s doing OK. I talk to her every two weeks.
