Scouting Combine 2000

Q&A with Alabama RB Shaun Alexander

Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000

Q: How well do you know (Wisconsin RB Ron) Dayne and the other highly regarded running backs, and is there any special camaraderie between all of you?

Alexander: We all know each other, having met through various All-America trips and awards shows. It seems like (Arizona State RB) J.R. Redmond has almost become like my roommate. I think it’s all very cool, and everybody is just excited to be in this situation. We all think it’s an honor and wish each other good luck.

Q: What do you say to all the people who say you lack blazing speed?

Alexander: I just thank God that it’s football we’re playing and not track. And I think that’s the way the rest of the NFL looks at it. So I’m really not too worried.

Q: What are you hoping to run the 40-yard dash in?

Alexander: I think I can run it in about 4.48. I think I’ve run it slower before because the lights were on.

Q: Do you enjoy all the hype that comes with the Combine?

Alexander: I think it’s just part of the whole process that everybody has to go through. You just have to learn to deal with it.

Q: Being from Cincinnati, have you followed the Corey Dillon saga?

Alexander: Oh, yes. And I’m aware of the fact that I could very well replace him if I’m drafted by the Bengals.

Q: Have you always been a Bengals fan?

Alexander: Yeah. I lived only eight minutes from the stadium. The "Ickey Shuffle" was my absolute favorite in sixth grade.

Q: Do you have your own dance?

Alexander: I don’t dance in the endzone. I danced when I was in high school about 2-3 times, and I kept on scoring so fast I was wearing myself out. So I just stopped doing it.

Q: What would you like to accomplish in the NFL?

Alexander: Most of my goals I usually keep to myself because I set pretty high goals, but one that I don’t mind sharing is just going out there and raising the level of whatever team I’m playing for. If we win a few games, then we start thinking double digits. If we are a playoff team, we go out and make sure we win those games. You know, just raise the bar.

Q: What’s your workout routine like?

Alexander: I work out about five hours a day normally. I’ll do my running early in the morning and then move on to my lifting at a nearby facility. Some days I’ll swim afterwards or do a little jog. I like to add a little variety whenever I can. I work out a lot, always pushing myself. I’m never fully satisfied.
