Michigan WR Tai Streets, projected as a possible second-round pick, slipped all the way
to the sixth round, where he was selected No. 171 overall by the 49ers. Streets suffered a
torn Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the 1999 season. If he is able to fully
recover, he could end up as a late-round steal. Streets is a big wideout who had sneaky
speed before the injury.
The Vikings traded OT Everett Lindsay to Baltimore for a sixth-round pick, No. 185
overall. The Vikings used the pick on UNLV DE Talance Sawyer. The Ravens have lost two OL
starters, Orlando Brown and Wally Williams, in free-agency.
Seattle traded up in the sixth round to get Steve Johnson with the first pick in the
sixth round (No. 170). Johnson is a speedy cover corner who could be a find if he
continues to develop.
The Broncos took Wake Forest product Desmond Clark at No. 179. Clark played wide
receiver in college, setting an ACC record for career receptions, but he will move to
tight end in the pros. He has good size but only marginal speed for a wideout, and he
needs to work on his blocking before he becomes an effective tight end. He is a similar
prospect to what Shannon Sharpe was coming out of school. Denver will also try to move
Chad Plummer (No. 204). He was an option quarterback at Cincinnati, but the Broncos
project him as a wide receiver. He could also get a look at running back.
Washington's selection of Tennessee PK Jeff Hall (No. 181) indicates that they still
aren't happy with their kicking situation. The Redskins used three kickers Scott
Blanton, David Akers and Cary Blanchard on placements last year, and former Packer
draft pick Brett Conway was around as a kickoff specialist. Hall will almost certainly
face training-camp competition for the PK job, but he has a good shot to stick.
The Jets picked their third guard of the draft by taking Illinois' J.P. Machado at No.
197. They also had selected Randy Thomas and David Loverne.
Dee Miller, picked at No. 196 by Green Bay, was more productive than Ohio State
teammate David Boston, Arizona's first-round pick, in college. Miller should help a WR
corps that has been decimated by injuries, most notably to Robert Brooks.
LB Jeff Kelly, picked by Atlanta at No. 198, is an undersized but productive linebacker
from Kansas State. He is kind of like Falcon MLB Jessie Tuggle, an undrafted free agent
coming out of college who has made four Pro Bowls and led the team in tackles for most of
the last decade.
